Success Stories

As Medicine Hat College grows so too does the need for student support and appropriate facilities. Student awards and funding for new construction is often provided through a mix of government, college and community sources. We’re proud to say that donors have stepped forward to provide millions of dollars toward scholarships, bursaries and facilities for Medicine Hat College students.

• Student Awards
  It is difficult to find an investment that offers greater lifetime benefit than education. Yet the cost of tuition, books and supplies is high. Thankfully, the generosity of private and corporate donors helps ensure financial concerns do not prevent students from attending college. Each year, donors and the college combine resources to offer over $300,000 in direct support to students.
  
• Vera Bracken Library and Multi-Purpose Building
  The Vera Bracken Library and Multi-Purpose Building will serve the needs of generations of students. Bright spaces combine with excellent labs and classrooms to provide an excellent place to study and learn. Donors provided $1.7 million (2004).
  
• EnCana Power Engineering Technology Centre
  Power engineering is a strong program that is aligns directly to the employment needs of Alberta’s energy and manufacturing sectors. Thanks to the support of EnCana, many other industry leaders, and the government of Alberta, the college was able to provide a new and technically sophisticated home for this program. Donors provided $2 million (2009).
  
• Open Learning Centre
  The challenges of family and job commitments can make returning to study as an adult a daunting task. Thanks to private support, the Open Learning Centre allows adults to develop their potential through classes that are adaptable to their schedules. A donor provided $1 million (1998).
  
• Peer Support Centre
  Sometimes the pressure of course work and family life is more than a person can cope with on their own. Private support made the Peer Support Centre possible. Now soft couches and understanding support is available to students who feel the need for a helping hand. Donors provided $500,000 (1998).
  
• Brooks Residence
  The Brooks campus has faced a dilemma for years. To grow, the campus needs to attract students from other communities. But the tight housing market in Brooks made it difficult for students to move to the community. The support of many community donors The Brooks Campus Residence solved that problem with the support of many community-minded businesses and individuals. Donors provided $200,000 (1998).
  
• Enhancing Learning
  All college programs benefit from access to current equipment, technology and expertise. Appropriate examples include vehicles that may be used by automotive and heavy equipment apprentices as they develop knowledge and skills that keep pace with ever-evolving technology in the industry.
