Library Privileges

Students enrolled in a distributed learning course offered by Medicine Hat College are entitled to the same privileges as any other student of the college.

Distributed learning students can use the Library Services’ homepage to access the same resources as an on-site student. This includes, but is not limited to, the databases, how-to guides, online catalogue, remote information services, etc.

Campus ID Card

Distributed learning students are automatically issued a college identification card as any other student. The card will include the student’s name, barcode, and college ID number; a generic image will be used in place of the student’s actual photograph.

The ID card will be issued with an appropriate validation sticker. Students will be mailed an updated validation sticker upon confirmation of enrollment in subsequent semesters.

For more information about the Campus ID Card, click here.

The Alberta Library (TAL) Card

If requested, a TAL Card will be issued. This will give distributed learning students borrowing privileges to more than 250 libraries across the province of Alberta.

The card will need to be renewed each semester; upon confirmation of enrollment, a new validation sticker will be issued. This validation sticker is different from the Campus ID Card’s sticker.

Requesting Library Materials

Books

To request items online, use the Request button from each item record in the online catalogue. Students will login using their name (e.g., john doe) and corresponding student ID number.

When requesting an item, please include the following in the “Please specify any special instructions” box: DL student. Please mail to: [your complete mailing address with postal code and phone number]. This feature is unavailable from the Quick Topic Search on the library homepage.

Items may also be requested by email. Please contact the Library Circulation Desk (circulation@mhc.ab.ca), specifying that you are a DL student. Include your name, student ID number, complete mailing address, phone number, and item information.

Journal, Magazine, and Newspaper Articles

Students will be able to access articles from periodical publications through the online databases. A list of databases is accessible through the “Advanced Article Search” link on the library services homepage or by clicking here.

To access the databases from off-campus/remote locations, students will be prompted to enter their student ID number.

Interlibrary Loans

To acquire resources that Library Services does not have in its online or physical collections, students can order those resources via the Interlibrary Loan Service.

Distributed learning students will need to create a personal account before beginning the ordering process; be sure to select “Distributed Learning” under the “Patron Type” drop box when registering.
