Dental hygienists have strong employment and earning opportunities throughout Canada, and the field is expected to continue growing over the next decade. Focusing on preventative care, dental hygienists play an important role in the health care field. They perform tasks such as dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, administering x-rays, and much more.
You are able to begin your studies in dental hygiene at Medicine Hat College and then apply to transfer to the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to complete your bachelor degree.
The minimum requirement for admission to the Dental Hygiene diploma program is the satisfactory completion of 30 transferable credits (ten courses), of which a minimum of 24 credits (eight courses) must be taken during one Fall/Winter academic year (September to April inclusive). A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 is required to be considered for admission, however, does not guarantee acceptance to the Dental Hygiene diploma program at the University of Alberta.
As part of the admission process, competitive applicants will be interviewed by an admissions team to determine if they possess the personal qualities necessary for the profession. The Dental Hygiene diploma program at the University of Alberta is a quota program and all applicants are in open competition for any given year. Applications for admission are accepted between July 1 and November 1 prior to the year admission is sought. Please note that limited spaces are available for out-of-province applicants.
