Medicine Hat College offers the first 20 pre-journalism courses towards a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at the University of Regina (a four-year degree program). In order to gain admission to the final two years of Journalism you must meet the following requirements:

  • Submit an application to the Admissions Office, University of Regina by January 15 for the following fall semester.
  • Have a minimum program average of 70% (B-) on a full two years of pre-journalism courses. All courses must be completed by April of the year you are applying.
  • Pass an entrance examination that includes an essay, an English proficiency test, critical thinking, and current events.
  • Successfully complete a Selection Board interview. Entrance examinations and interviews take place between February and April.

There is competition for spaces in the School of Journalism. Not all qualified candidates are interviewed. We encourage you to consult with a Medicine Hat College Academic Advisor, a University of Regina Academic Advisor, and the University of Regina calendar regarding admission requirements and course selections. It is important that you make correct course choices as part of your Bachelor’s degree.

Pre-Journalism requirements:

  • Two first-year courses in English (ENGL 202 & ENGL 203)
  • One university-level course in Logic or Mathematics (AMAT, MATH, STAT 213STAT 251 or STAT 333)
  • Two courses in the same language other than English (FREN, SPAN)
  • One Natural Science course, involving laboratory work (BIOL, CHEM, GEOG 201, PHYS or ZOOL)
  • One Fine Arts course (ARTS option, DRAM or MUHL)
  • One Humanities course, in addition to those used to fill the English, language, and logic requirements
  • Three of the following courses:
    • An introductory Economics course
    • A History course, emphasizing Canadian history (HIST 231, HIST 233, HIST 331HIST 333 or HIST 345)
    • A Sr. Political Science course, emphasizing Canadian politics and government (POLI 223)
    • A Social Science course dealing with the media in a social science context (SOCI 345)
    • The remaining courses may be elective courses from any faculty and may include prerequisites for the required courses
      • A maximum of 14 introductory level courses may be used in the pre-journalism program.

      High School Route
      (Alberta High School courses or equivalents with a minimum 60% average in the required courses) 

      • ELA 30-1
      • Pure Math 30 or Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 or a 30-level second language 
      • Two additional 30-level academic subjects
      • One Grade 12 5-credit subject (excluding Special Projects)

      Mature Route
      The following are minimum admission requirements. Please see an advisor for additional course-specific pre-requisites.

      • ELA 30-1
      • One other 30-level academic subject

      Note: some majors at some universities require Pure Math 30 or Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 (ie. U of C Social Science)

      A career in journalism can lead to employment as:

      • editor or associate editor
      • researcher
