FAQ's
1. When can I apply?
You can apply at any time! However, for the Fall (September) semester we suggest you apply as soon as you have received your first semester marks (usually mid February). Some programs have quotas, which means they only accept a limited number of students no matter how may apply, so your completed application must be received by the college by the deadline stated in the calendar. Additional applications may be received after the deadline, however the program may already be full. University Studies courses do not have quotas so you can apply right up until the start of classes; however, if there is insufficient enrolment for a particular program, the course may not be offered. It is important to apply and register as early as you can. 2. How do I apply? Application forms are available at your high school or directly from Brooks Campus. Complete the application form and request an official copy of your high school transcripts from the Department of Education if you have already completed high school. If you are currently attending high school, please include a copy of your grade 11 marks, any first semester grade 12 marks and a copy of the courses you will be enrolled in for the second semester. You should then request an official copy of your transcripts at the end of June when you are finished all of your classes. You may apply to more than one program, but you must submit a separate application for each program, and indicate which is your first choice, second choice, etc. There is a $60 application fee. 3. What are the admission requirements to the College? This is dependent upon the program you are applying to. If you apply to a university transfer program, you must have a passing mark in, or be currently enrolled in, English 30 (not English 33)and other specific subjects required for different programs and different universities. University transfer students must present 5 appropriate grade 12 subjects with a minimum average of 60%. If you are applying to a certificate or diploma program, you must present the specific subjects required for that particular program. Some certificate and diploma programs may have additional non-academic admission requirements. If you are currently enrolled in any of the required subjects, you may be conditionally admitted to a program on the basis that you successfully complete the requirements prior to starting the program. 4. What happens if I do not pass a required course for admission? If you applied to a university transfer program you may be permitted to take a combined upgrading and university transfer program. However, if you did not pass English 30, you are restricted to the upgrading program where you can repeat English 30. If you applied to a certificate or diploma program you may not be allowed to start the program until you have satisfied the admission requirement. 5. What do I do after I am accepted? Once you are accepted to a university transfer program, you will need to come to the college to register for your classes with the assistance of an Academic Advisor. If you were accepted to a certificate or diploma program, you may be sent a pre-made registration form (fall semester only) with all of your courses already listed. You are then required to pay a $120 to $200 deposit, depending upon the program. 6. What is the difference between applying and registering? Applying is simply seeing if you will be accepted into a program. Registering is selecting the courses, times, and instructors you will have for the semester. 7. University Transfer A) Do I have to choose which university I want to transfer to? For some programs it is extremely important to choose a university before starting your program. For other programs, it is not absolutely necessary; however, you should have some idea to ensure that you take the proper courses. Different universities have different requirements and not all university transfer courses will transfer to all universities.
B) How do I know if my courses transfer? Consult with an Academic Advisor regarding transfer agreements with institutions inside and outside of Alberta. Legally bound transfer agreements will guarantee the transferability of your courses once you have received a passing grade. C) What marks do I need to transfer? You must receive a C- (1.7 out of a 4.0 scale) or better in order for a course to transfer. However, if you are applying to a competitive faculty at a university, you are not guaranteed admission. Each faculty and each university will have a different required GPA (Grade Point Average) that applies to that faculty. Students transferring from Medicine Hat College have the same chance of being accepted into a competitive faculty as students who are currently attending that university. D) How many courses do I need to transfer? This largely depends on the faculty you wish to transfer to. See an Academic Advisor to discuss your program. 8. What scholarships are available and how do I apply for them? Medicine Hat College - Brooks Campus Scholarships are listed on page 38 of the college calendar (pdf). Once you have applied to Brooks Campus and have been accepted, you will receive a package with a copy of the scholarship application. You must apply for scholarships; they are not automatically awarded. To apply for scholarships online, please click here. 9. How do I apply for Student Loans? Student Loan application forms will arrive at high schools and the College in late April. If you have applied to Medicine Hat College - Brooks Campus and have any questions regarding your Student Loan, please contact Rose Buza at (403) 362-1677. 10. What recreational activities are available? There are excellent public athletic facilities available in our community. Students registered in fewer that three classes may obtain a pass by paying a fee differential at the front office. 11. What about a job? Workshops (resume preparation, interviewing skills, cover letters, job search strategies) are available through the Medicine Hat College Student Employment and Career Services Centre if there are a least six students interested at the Brooks Campus.
