Deaf and Blind Support Specialist ( DBSS )

DBSS 100 Introduction to Working with Individuals who are Deaf /Deafblind/Blind
This course will provide students with exposure to best practices in the various settings they may encounter once they are in the work force. As well, relevant ethical and professional issues will be addressed.

DBSS 101 Introduction to Sensory Loss (Hearing Assistant)
Basic introduction to educational practices with deaf and hard of hearing students that will set debates about methodology and practice into a practical context with a primary focus on the needs of the individual students, their parents, and their family. Content will focus on language and speech, family structure and dynamics, broader cultural contexts, methods of communications and the role of paraprofessionals who are necessary supports for Deaf and hard of hearing students. DBSS 102 Introduction to Sensory Loss (Vision Assistant)
Course is designed to prepare future Teacher Assistants in the understanding of their role in respect to the education of children who are blind or visually impaired. You are also introduced to roles that various disciplines play in providing services to individuals with visual impairments. Services, models of education, and educational history of the blind and visually impaired will also be discussed. (Formerly DBSS 202)

DBSS 103 Introduction to Dual Sensory Impairment (Intervenor for Deafblind Persons)
Introduction to persons with a dual sensory loss – deafblindness. You are exposed to causes of deafblindness, the profession of Intervenors, deafblind communication, resources, organizations for individuals with sensory impairments and intervention strategies. (Formerly DBSS 203)

DBSS 110 Introduction to Contracted Braille
In this course, you develop skills in reading and writing in contracted Braille, using the Perkins Brailler and a simple software program. (Formerly DBSS 210)

DBSS 120 Signed Exact English I
Prerequisite: Enrollment in program or permission of Program Coordinator.
Introduction to Signed Exact English. Course teaches you basic vocabulary, suffixes, prefixes and fingerspelling as well as background on the philosophy of SEE II. (Formerly DBSS 220)

DBSS 121 Signing Exact English II
Prerequisite: DBSS 120
Course builds on receptive and expressive skills developed in the Signing Exact English I course and provides further vocabulary development in Signing Exact English specific to the educational setting. Will be offered in geographical areas where there is sufficient demand. (Formerly DBSS 221)

DBSS 122 Introduction to Transliteration
Corequisite: DBSS 121
Course introduces the skills required for transliteration of Spoken English to Signing Exact English and Signing Exact English to Spoken English. Will be offered in geographical areas where there is sufficient demand. (Formerly DBSS 222)

DBSS 130 An Introduction to Orientation & Mobility
You develop the skills required to provide safe, efficient, and independent travel for individuals who are visually impaired. You learn skills involved in mobility, spatial and environmental awareness while working under blindfold and vision simulators. (Formerly DBSS 330)

DBSS 150 Speech & Language Issues and Intervention
The focus of this course will be basic assessment information, in depth information about ecological assessment and interventions in combination with program planning. Language, speech and communication issues related to persons with hearing and/or vision loss will be stressed, with discussion of techniques helpful for working with diversity, families and with clients in community settings. Includes content related to adjustment to disabilities, the grieving process, the roles of habilitation and rehabilitation, and interdisciplinary teamwork.

DBSS 160 Introduction to American Sign Language
Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), which is the official language of the Deaf community in Canada and United States. ASL has its own unique grammar and sentence structure. This course will teach you about Deaf culture and history while you develop basic vocabulary, fingerspelling, facial expressions, receptive and expressive skills to communicate with persons whom are Deaf. Even if you are outside the program, you are invited to take the course, subject to approval by the instructor. (Formerly INT 260)

DBSS 161 American Sign Language I
Prerequisite: DBSS 160
Course builds on DBSS 160, by developing broader vocabulary and conversational skills. You continue with ASL sentence types, time, numbers, pronominalization, classifiers, pluralization, and temporal aspects. Even if you are outside the program, you are invited to take the course, subject to approval by the instructor.

DBSS 165 Deaf Studies
You will be provided with more in depth information about Deaf Culture, including societal norms, famous Deaf people, and the rich heritage that is cherished by the Deaf community. Persons who will be interacting with members of the Deaf community (can and does include individuals who happen to be deaf or deafblind) MUST have sufficient knowledge of this area to be able to successfully work in their chosen field.

DBSS 170 Educational Setting Practicum
You are placed in an educational setting for five hours each week where there are children with special learning needs. (formerly ESS 270)

You are placed in a community setting for five hours each week, working with individuals requiring support to daily living. (Formerly INT 270)

DBSS 180 Educational Setting Practicum
Eight-week placement in a classroom setting working with a child or children with a specialized learning need in the your chosen area of study. In some instances, you may be required to relocate to successfully complete this practicum. Any costs associated with the relocation will be the responsibility of the student. DBSS 205 Guidelines for Intervenors; Augmentative Communication & Other Practical Skills
This course is designed to provide Intervenor students with opportunities to experience practical skills they would not otherwise have the chance to practice.

DBSS 211 Braille Beyond Contractions
Prerequisite: DBSS 110
Continuing from DBSS 110, this course explores elements of braille such as abbreviations, fractions, time, and units of measurement. It also teaches the type of format to braille for such things as poetry, letters, lists, and plays and how to show special typeface such as italics or underlining.

DBSS 217 Accessibility and Adapted Techniques
Introduction to key areas that promote access to information and community for an individual who is blind or deafblind in order to facilitate integration into the community. You explore a variety of adaptive devices and access technology. This course also focuses on the skills involved in writing Large Print Notes (LPN). Course can be taken on site through a summer institute.

DBSS 260 American Sign Language II
Prerequisite: DBSS 161
A continuation of the INT 261 ASL course and builds upon previously learned ASL grammar and sentence structure, vocabulary, and Deaf culture. Even if you are outside the program, you are invited to take the course, subject to approval by the instructor. (Formerly INT 360)

DBSS 270 Practicum
Participation in a practicum equivalent to three hours per week in order to provide you with opportunities to integrate theory and strategies into real life situations.

DBSS 280 Practicum
Prerequisite: DBSS 120 & DBSS 130 & DBSS 211 & DBSS 260 & DBSS 299
This is a 13-week placement in either a community or educational setting, working with individuals who are Deafblind. In most instances, you are required to relocate to successfully complete this practicum. Any costs associated with the relocation will be your responsibility. (Formerly INT 370)

DBSS 299 Challenges and Issues for Support Services
Using problem based learning techniques, you examine challenges in decision making, ethics, and worker-client relationships. This course also involves discussion of circumstances secondary to deafblindness that may provide challenges when working with individuals who are deafblind. Non-aversive intervention for behavior concerns is also taught. (Formerly INT 300)
