Environmental Reclamation ( EREC )

EREC 120 Petroleum Industry Fundamentals
A general overview of the different aspects of the petroleum industry operations in Alberta and Canada. The course describes how the petroleum industry contributes to the economy of Canada, the origin of oil and gas, prospecting for petroleum, drilling and completion, production and abandonment. Environmental and safety issues in the petroleum industry are introduced. Field trips are a mandatory part of this course.
Hours: 56 hrs (4-0)
Credits: 3
EREC 200 Agronomy for Environmental Technologists
This course provides you with a basic introduction to agricultural practices in Alberta including forage, field crop (wheat, barley, oats, etc) production and ranching. Other topics that you will be introduced to include: equipment used in agriculture, Agricultural regulations and acts, different forms of land tenure, agricultural programs and professional organizations, agricultural contracts, farm safety and etiquette. Field trips and guest speakers are important aspects of this course.
Hours: 56 hrs (4-0)
Credits: 3
EREC 220 Environmental Sampling and Monitoring
Reclamation not only involves the collection of data and samples prior to development of a reclamation plan, but during the process and on an on-going basis for monitoring. This course will cover the development of sampling strategies, sample collection, the management of samples and related data, plus documentation and interpretation of results obtained from accredited testing facilities. Covers CSA and AENV procedures. This course also introduces you to the major categories of environmental contaminants encountered during environmental reclamation. This course will involve field trips, lab activities and group projects where samples from reclamation sites are collected and processed.
Hours: 70 hrs (3-2)
Credits: 4
EREC 230 Water Fundamentals
Water and especially potable water as a resource is increasingly becoming a major environmental issue. Understanding basic hydrogeological principles will ensure that reclamation plans will minimize erosion or the potential contamination of fresh-water bodies and aquifers. In the dry mixed grass prairie where precipitation and ground water is the major limiting factor in the ecosystem, familiarity with hydrogeological process are even more critical. This course has both field and lab components.
Hours: 70 hrs (3-2)
Credits: 4
EREC 240 Environmental Assessment
An essential part of reclamation is carrying out site environmental impact assessment (EIA) studies so that a reclamation plan can be developed. This course will introduced the process of carrying out reclamation site assessments to the phase 1 and 2 levels as outlined and required within provincial and federal guidelines. This course has both field and lab components including group projects in which assessments will be carried out on abandoned well-heads.
Hours: 70 hrs (3-2)
Credits: 4
EREC 260 Land Reclamation and Revegetation
Following site assessment and development of a reclamation plan this course would involve you in the actual reclamation of a site. You would gain familiarity with equipment used in this process; the correct documentation and disposal of waste materials; erosion control; soil amendment; weed management and monitoring of the reclamation site. This course would also introduce the practices and techniques of revegetation of disturbed lands associated with oil and gas exploration, drilling and well abandonment. Topics would include: assessment and surveying of native plant species; the collection of native plant species for revegetation; evaluation of purity and germination of seeds for reclamation sites; production of reclamation vegetation and follow-up monitoring. Bioengineering practices to reduce erosion is introduced.
Hours: 70 hrs (3-2)
Credits: 4
EREC 263 Land Reclamation Legislation
New provincial and federal legislation introduced requires environmental reclamation to be carried out following detailed guidelines and criteria. Familiarity with land reclamation legislation is an important aspect of being to develop reclamation plans and ensure compliance leading to certification. This course covers the legislation and detail the legal requirements required for reclamation certification.
Hours: 56 hrs (4-0)
Credits: 3
EREC 280 Career Work Experience
You will be placed with a company involved in environmental reclamation obtaining practical on-the-job experience that will apply the concepts you have learned from your studies in the Environmental Reclamation Program at Medicine Hat College. Graded on a CR (Pass)/NC (Fail) basis.
Hours: 220 hrs (0-35P) 6 weeks
Credits: 4.5
