ITEC 100 Professional Communications I
Introductory course that helps you develop the skills, strategies, and techniques needed to prepare a variety of business and technical documents. Using word-processing and desktop publishing tools, you become familiar with the ways in which computer technologies can be incorporated into the prewriting, drafting, editing and production stages.

ITEC 110 A+ Computer Technology I
A+ is a microcomputer industry-wide proficiency standard. The course includes essential operating system competencies and hardware knowledge for a microcomputer hardware service technician. This course, in conjunction with ITEC 130, may be used to prepare you to write the CompTia A+ examinations. You are not required to write CompTia exams to pass the course.

ITEC 120 Applied Mathematics
A combination of technical and business mathematics, this course is designed to improve your general math and problem solving capabilities. Business math topics such as percentages, interest calculations, future and present value will be studied in conjunction with the use of a spreadsheet program (currently Microsoft Excel). Basic algebra and problem solving abilities are strengthened.

ITEC 130 A+ Computer Technology II
Prerequisite: ITEC 110
Continuation of ITEC 110. The course includes essential operating system competencies and hardware knowledge for a microcomputer hardware service technician. This course, in conjunction with ITEC 110, may be used to prepare you to write the CompTia A+ examinations. You are not required to write CompTia exams to pass the course.

ITEC 140 Programming Fundamentals I
Introduction to computer programming using a mainstream object oriented, and event driven language (currently Visual Basic.NET). Topics include: User interface design, algorithms, and various foundational programming concepts such as types, variables, objects expressions, control structures, and so on. In the labs, you are given the opportunity to complete a variety of event driven, windows based programs.

ITEC 145 Programming Fundamentals II
Prerequisite: ITEC 140
Continuing from ITEC 140, you develop your expertise in object oriented event driven programming (currently Visual Basic.NET). Topics include: Additional control structures, arrays, subprograms and parameters, file handling, simple class creation, and so on.

ITEC 150 Application Software
From the perspective of the information technology professional, this course examines a range of current software applications and productivity enhancement tools with a view to understanding their purpose and functionality, extensibility, system requirements, and client support needs. Applications include desktop productivity tools, e-mail, Internet applications, communication tools, graphics, and so on.

ITEC 155 Applications Support
Course focuses on the technological support of a wide variety of workplace tools and software in a business environment. Topics include system requirements, installation, deployment, configuration, troubleshooting, backup and restoration, system transfer, upgrades, security, and so on.

ITEC 170 Networking Fundamentals
Networking fundamentals such as terminology, communication protocols, the OSI model and network hardware and software configuration are studied. Networking concepts such as TCP/IP configuration, routing, and dial-up networking are introduced in context of an Internet connection. Methods of connecting to the Internet, line speeds and service options are discussed.

ITEC 180 Business and Accounting Principles
You are introduced to the terms, concepts and practices of business and elementary accounting essential for the information technology professional. Course gives an overview of the broad elements of business including the business environment, organization, management, and marketing. Accounting introduces the accounting cycle, the accounting equation, and financial statements. In the labs, you learn how accounting software, database, and spreadsheet analysis is used to directly support business functions (e.g., inventory management).

ITEC 190 Web Development I
Focus is on the development of web pages and complete web sites. Utilizing HTML and/or XHTML, together with client-side scripting (currently JavaScript), you are introduced to various tags, attributes and scripting syntax necessary to ready text and images for use on the World Wide Web. Enabling technologies such as browser software, File Transfer Protocol, client software, and graphic tools are also covered.

ITEC 205 Work Experience Preparation
Prerequisite: ITEC 100
This course prepares students in the Co-op stream for the work experience, ITEC 291. Seminars are given to help students improve resume writing skills, acquaint them with workplace procedures, familiarize them with job interviews and the Co-op evaluation process. Successful completion of the course will enable students to make a smooth transition to the workplace for their Co-op term.

ITEC 250 Help Desk I
Prerequisite: ITEC 130
Course prepares you to work in a Help Desk. You learn how to deal effectively with a wide variety of customer situations and to create positive interaction between customers and co-workers. The course also gives an overview of the main Help Desk tools, technologies, processes, and management concepts.

ITEC 255 Help Desk II
Prerequisite: ITEC 250
In many organizations, Help Desks are becoming the central area for end user support. Being an integral part of the Information Technology Support function can be challenging, frustrating, and exciting all at once. This course continues from ITEC 250 and teaches innovative and "best practice" techniques in managing a Help Desk.

ITEC 270 Database Management I
An introduction to data, databases ,and data management, this course offers a combination of theory and hands-on experience necessary for a foundational understanding of data management. Topics include database design and normalization, Structured Query Language (SQL), indexes, forms, queries and reports.

ITEC 275 Database Management II
Prerequisite: ITEC 270
Following ITEC 270, you expand your ability to analyze and develop database related applications. Course topics include examination of client server models, multi-user support, distributed databases, Internet connectivity, and n-tier software design. In the labs, you work on developing solutions for various business data management applications using relevant software development tools and programming for Internet/Intranet and or Windows.

ITEC 280 Operating Systems Survey
Prerequisite: ITEC 130
This course provides coverage of various alternative operating systems - currently Linux and Unix. Installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux systems, as well as a wide variety of commands and functions, are covered. Emphasis is on using Linux and Unix in a server role, with topics such as web services, email, DNS, and firewalls. General system administration topics such as managing users and groups, managing system resources, and security are also studied. You also learn how Linux and Unix interact with other operating systems, particularly with Microsoft Windows.

ITEC 285 Security
Prerequisite: 2nd Year Standing
Course focuses on the operational and technical aspects of computer and network security such as managing permissions, accounts, security updates, virus protection, encryption, firewall installation and configuration, network monitoring, and auditing. Good network management and administration techniques are emphasized as fundamentals to maintaining secure systems and networks.

ITEC 291 Work Experience
Prerequisite: ITEC 205
The work experience is the core of the Co-op stream of the Information Technology program. You will be placed in employment situations at competitive wages with local employers. Progress will be evaluated by employers, students and Co-op Coordinator who will supervise the course. The work experience normally takes place in the Spring/Summer session between he first and second years of the Information Technology program. Graded on a CR (Pass)/NC (Fail) basis. Total tuition for this course is $700.

ITEC 295 Special Support Topics
Prerequisite: Second year standing
New technologies continually rise to prominence in information technology. This course focuses on important current technologies that round out the skill set of the information technology graduate majoring in technology support.
