  General Program Information

The University of Calgary (UofC) Bachelor of Nursing Program at the Medicine Hat College is a three-and-a-half year program offered entirely on the Medicine Hat College (MHC) campus. The program has been accredited by the nationally based Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (2007-2012) and has been approved by the provincially based Nursing Education Program Approval Board (2007-2012).

You apply to enter the program at MHC. Upon successful completion of your first two years of the program and upon meeting the UofC Faculty of Nursing admission criteria, you apply to the UofC as a third year student. You take the remainder of the program as a UofC student, but remain on the MHC campus. When you have successfully completed the program, you will be awarded a Bachelor of Nursing, University of Calgary at the Medicine Hat College Site. Application processing begins November 1 for the Fall semester of the following year. For competitive programs, when we receive more qualified applicants than our quota of seats in a program, the top academically ranked applicants will enter the selection process. Applications will be accepted until all seats are filled.

This collaborative program has two foci – gerontology and rural nursing – and will prepare you to write the CRNE (Canadian Registered Nurse Examination), a prerequisite for working as a registered nurse. Under the provincial Health Professions Act: Registered Nurses Profession Regulation 3(1) “An applicant for registration as a regulated member of the registered nurse register must... (b) on and after January 1, 2010, have a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an approved nursing program undertaken in Alberta...”

  Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities for registered nurses are dramatically increasing and the trend is expected to continue. Baccalaureate prepared nurses can also pursue graduate studies that enable them to have more advanced roles in practice and in nursing research.

  Admission Requirements

You must apply to Medicine Hat College for admission to Year One of the program and must satisfy the admission criteria established by the University of Calgary (see admission regulations in the Academic Regulations section of the University of Calgary calendar).

Refer to Admissions Chart

International Student Admission
Students should be aware of the following “English Language Proficiency” requirements. For entry to the Bachelor of Nursing program, students must present a minimum score of 237 on the computer-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and a score of 50 on the Test of Spoken English; or a minimum score of 580 on the paper-based TOEFL examination and a score of 50 on the TSE.

Pre-Program Requirements
After being admitted to the program, you must provide proof of current CPR certification with any of the following CPR certificates:
• Heart & Stroke Heartsaver AED (C)
• Canadian Red Cross Level C
• St. John Ambulance Level C

By May 1 of your first year, and if you are enrolled in the spring course NURS 264, you must have one of the following certificates, all of which are at a Health Care Provider level:
• Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers
• Canadian Red Cross Level HCP
• St. John Ambulance CPR for Health Care Providers

The Nursing Program will assist you in obtaining the certification, but there will be a cost.

Upon admission, you will receive forms in the mail that must be completed and returned to the College. These include a health questionnaire and a completed program of immunization. In some case, you may also require a chest x-ray. You must present a current Police Record check upon admission. Having a police record may not necessarily preclude your acceptance into the program, but you need to discuss any police record with the Nursing Program Coordinator. All of the above must be submitted before starting the nursing program.

Students in their second year must apply to the University of Calgary by December 1 of that year. MHC submits your transcripts to the university on your behalf.

  Continuation Requirements

Your academic performance is reviewed at the end of each semester – Fall, Winter, and Spring. To maintain satisfactory standing,
• gain CREDIT (CR) in the clinical courses. In these courses, you are not assigned a letter grade, but are evaluated against standards explained to you by your instructors. If you meet those standards you will obtain CR and if you do not, you will receive NO CREDIT (NC) for that course.
• obtain a minimum of a C- in all non-clinical nursing courses and support courses; grades of less than a C- must be cleared.
• successfully completed all first and second year courses prior to entering the third year as a U of C student.
• clear any NC or grade less than C- and you will usually be permitted to repeat a particular nursing course only once. If you receive a NC or a grade less than C- for the first time, you are not automatically out of the nursingprogram and may continue in certain nursing courses. See the program coordinator.
• maintain a current and a cumulative GPa of 2.0 (first and second years at MHC) and 2.5 GPA for third and fourth years of the program (University of Calgary regulations).
• if you fail to receive a credit for a clinial course or at least a C- for a classroom course, you may or may not be able to repeat that course in the winter semester immediately following. See the program coordinator.
• Follow the U of C academic regulations in your third and fourth year.

Academic Probation
You will be placed on probation if:
1. your semester GPA is less than 2.0 while enrolled at MHC (first and second years).
2. your GPA is less than 2.5 while enrolled at the U of C (third and fourth years).
3. you are required to repeat any nursing course, regardless of your GPA.

You will be allowed academic probationary status only once while registered in the nursing program.

Clinical Experiences
Your clinical experiences may be at sites outside of Medicine Hat and may be scheduled at various hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends. You are expected to make accommodation for commitments outside the program to fit this scheduling. Participation in all activities related to clinical is mandatory. Failure to fully participate in clinical experiences may jeopardize your standing in the program. Evaluations by instructors are largely based on your day-to-day performance. Should your performance compromise patient safety and/or fall below acceptable professional standards of the program, you maybe asked to leave the clinical site and may not receive credit for the course. Normally, you cannot withdraw from a clinical course to avoid a NC for that course.

Other Relevant Information
• Information related to your academic conduct and clinical performance at MHC may be shared with the UofC.
• You may require a medical clearance to continue after an injury, illness, or surgery.

  Notes

Tuition Levels
Fees for the nursing program reflect tuition and extra costs associated with offering a degree at the Medicine Hat site. These extra costs are averaged across the nursing courses and are reflected as surcharges.

Other Program Costs
When budgeting for your studies, remember that you will need to buy uniforms, appropriate shoes, lab supplies in both nursing and non-nursing courses, a watch with a sweep hand, a stethoscope, pay for CPR re-certifications, and pay travel and accommodation costs during your rural nursing clinical course and your preceptorship. You may also need another recent criminal check for some experiences. Access to a personal vehicle is required for experiences in the community.

Program Regulations
Duration of Program
Except with special permission of the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) at the UofC, the BN degree must be completed within seven calendar years from the date of initial registration in the program.

Nursing Registration Examinations and Convocation
If you successfully complete the nursing program by December of your fourth year, you are eligible to write the Canadian Nurse Registered Exam in February. You will convocate from the UofC in June.
