Cultural Centre
 |
The Cultural Centre opened in 1983 and is a unique venue for numerous
cultural activities in southern Alberta. This modern,
elegant building is the culmination of a joint venture
by Medicine Hat College and the City of Medicine
Hat. It offers a recital hall, rehearsal
rooms, music studios, exhibition gallery, and various art studios. Hours vary according to the season. The centre is owned and operated by Medicine
Hat College. Situated on the beautifully landscaped
college campus, this centre provides the ideal location
for many educational and cultural activities. |
The Cultural Centre
also houses Medicine Hat College's Conservatory
of Music and Dance and the Department of Music and Dance.
The department offers a wide variety of music and dance classes.
There are theory classes and ensembles for all students.
The City of
Medicine Hat
The city's four spacious art studios overlooking the pond are
bright and comfortable, with high ceilings, large windows
and a variety of adjustable lighting. These studios are leased
by four community visual arts groups: the Fibre Arts Society
and the Hat Art Club (529-1174), the Photo
Print Club (529-3882) and the Hat Potters Club (526-6204).
Each group acts as an agent for the City of Medicine Hat in
programming the space and providing classes, workshops and
studio time with and without instructors. Twenty-four hour
access to a studio at the Cultural Centre is possible when
membership fees to that organization have been paid.
The Studio Shop, in the foyer, displays original art and crafts
and has items for sale made at the centre. The shop is cooperatively
run by club members. The Gallery has new showings once a month
open to the public.
The City of Medicine Hat also coordinates the use of the four
rehearsal rooms situated along the front of the centre. These
rooms, designed for drama and dance, along with the workshop
and performance arts storage space, provide excellent facilities
from rehearsals to complete productions. These areas are also
suitable for events such as conferences, socials, and meetings.
