Occupational Health and Safety

About This Program

Concern for health and safety in the workplace is increasing among workers and employers across all industries and society in general.

Medicine Hat College is proud to offer students the opportunity to complete the University of Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Certificate program. This part-time program is designed to help practitioners from many different backgrounds develop the competencies needed to be effective in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health and safety programs and systems in a wide variety of occupational settings.

Core competencies of our graduates:

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of healthy and safe workplaces
  • Enhance the professional practices of people responsible for occupational health and safety programs, systems, procedures, and techniques
  • Develop the professional competence of people who practice (or aspire to practice) as occupational health and safety professionals
  • Develop an understanding of and the ability to apply concepts, principles, and practices involved in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, control, prevention, reduction, and elimination of hazards, accidents, injuries, diseases, and disabilities to people in on-the-job situations

According to the 2015 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, Albertans in the Occupational Health and Safety Officer occupational group earned a starting wage from $36.64 - $54.66 an hour. The average wage was $43.31 an hour. (www.alis.alberta.ca/wageinfo)

This program requires the completion of 329 credit hours:

  • 6 core courses
  • 2 elective courses
  • 35 hours of enrichment seminars

It is a practice-oriented, research-based, multidisciplinary program based on an integration of engineering, physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychological knowledge with problems and challenges in practice.

NOTES:

  1. While it is recommended that students begin their program with Introduction to Health & Safety (foundation course), they can complete the courses in any order provided the noted prerequisite(s) has been met.
  2. Students have a maximum of 6 years to complete all requirements of the program. Most will complete in 2 – 3 years.
  3. All courses include a variety of assignments, quizzes, exams and projects. To be successful, students should expect to dedicate significant time and effort in coursework. Regular attendance is expected.
  4. In response to demand, many courses are delivered in condensed format (four-day, three-weekend, and some two-weekend). In the condensed-format offerings, students are expected to have a solid understanding of OH&S concepts in order to be successful.
  5. Pre-course work may be required to be completed prior to the start of classes.

Exemption Credit Request

If you have one of the following designations, the University of Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Program recognizes your hard work and dedication by awarding exemption credit of 21 hours toward the 35 hours of Enrichment Seminars. Individuals with the following designations are encouraged to apply for this exemption credit by completing the Application For Exemption Form and submitting it together with proof of their designation and a $125 exemption fee to the University of Alberta:

  • NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) offered through the Alberta Construction Safety Association of Alberta (www.acsa-safety.org)
  • MSO (Manufacturing Safety Officer) offered through the Manufacturers’ Safety Association www.mhsa.ab.ca
  • QSR (Qualified Safety Representative) offered through the Alberta Association of Safety Partnerships (www.safetypartnershipsaasp.com)

Courses are paid on a course by course basis. Prices are subject to change. Fees are as follows:

Core Courses and Elective Courses
$745 + GST per course

Enrichment Seminars
7 hour seminars: $349 + GST per course
14 hour seminars: $499 + GST per course

The common textbook required for most, if not all, classes is the most current version of the OHS Act, Regulation and Code: 2009. It will be assumed by instructors of all classes that students have access to a copy of this text.

Some courses require the purchase of additional textbooks.

In order to have the courses that you have taken recognized as contributing to the OHS Certificate, students must apply for admission to the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension. Students should make application no later than after completion of 2 courses.

  • Submit a completed Application for Admission form to the University of Alberta (U of A).
  • Submit a one-time only, non-refundable $100.00 admission fee.
  • Submit a completed Course Registration form indicating course selection to MHC.
  • All applications to the U of A must be accompanied with a high school OR post-secondary education transcript. If you attended a high school in Alberta, transcripts may be ordered from Alberta Education at 427-5732; if you attended high school outside of Alberta, contact the provincial department of education.

Graduation

The Certificate Program Graduation is held in June to honour students who have completed the requirements for a University of Alberta Certificate by the end of March. When registering for your final course, please ensure you complete the Graduation Application and submit no later than February 1st. Students must complete and return the Application for Graduation Form whether or not they plan on attending the annual graduation ceremony.

Students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 to earn a certificate. Students achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher will graduate with distinction.

Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards

Safety Dynamics Award

$750 – Apply by January 31.

Safety Dynamics, a local Medicine Hat Safety Consulting and Training Corporation, is offering two bursaries in support of students who are participating in the U of A’s Occupational Health and Safety Certificate Program at Medicine Hat College. 

Applications must be received prior to the January 30th deadline, and applicants must be currently accepted to the U of A’s Occupational Health and Safety Certificate Program. Two awards of $750 each will be presented.
