Homecoming for MHC's new academic vice-president & provost
With a passion for programs and learner pathways, Dr. Nancy Brown is returning to Medicine Hat College as its new academic vice-president and provost.Brown taught in MHC’s Division of Science & Health between 2002 and 2015, then served as its department chair from 2015-2017. She left MHC to pursue an associate dean position at Red Deer Polytechnic, but always valued the relationships made and experiences gained during her time at the college.
But prior to her arrival in Alberta’s sunny south, Brown’s academic career began with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Saskatchewan, followed by a PhD in Immunology from the U of A. She also completed two postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Toronto, which included four years of research and multiple publications. She then pursued an MBA from Royal Roads University while working at MHC, receiving that credential in 2017.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Nancy joining us this fall. Her connection to our college and communities is strong and her experience invaluable. The breadth of knowledge she brings, along with a proven track record of institutional strategy and program development, supports MHC’s commitment to the region and its role as a Comprehensive Community College,” says Kevin Shufflebotham, president and CEO.
Brown celebrates the diversity of higher education opportunities and credentials made available through colleges and polytechnics and recognizes they all have a role to play in building strong communities.
“For me, this pathway was a research and academic career. But every learner’s pathway is unique. The faculty and leadership at MHC are laser focused on providing an exceptional learning experience for all their students, ensuring their successful transition to the workforce or to further studies,” explains Brown.
“I understand and appreciate Medicine Hat College’s desire to do things differently than other postsecondary institutions, to build on its existing strengths, and to meet the needs of the region through meaningful partnerships.”
Brown will start at MHC on Nov. 14, 2022.
