MHC trades students win big at Skills Alberta competition
Students from the school of trades and technology made Medicine Hat College (MHC) proud after placing in the top rankings at the Skills Canada Alberta competition on May 3 and 4.Euan Mackinnon and Justin Lindmark, both third-year apprentices, respectively won the gold and silver medals in the steamfitter/pipefitter category during the two-day competition, held at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
Chad Baron, instructor for the steamfitter/pipefitter program at MHC, was the coach for the students, providing guidance and helping the students prepare.
“It's exciting to help prepare students like Euan and Justin for a trade skills competition and to help them achieve a goal outside of the traditional classroom setting,” says Baron. “We’re proud of how they have represented MHC and the extra time they put into the competition.”
The students spent several weekend hours at the college practicing their skills and learning from Baron, which Mackinnon attributes to his gold-medal success.
“I wouldn’t be in this position without my instructor and the journeymen that have taught me so much. I’m extremely thankful for the people I’ve been surrounded by throughout my apprenticeship.”
Mackinnon will now represent Alberta at the Skills Canada National Competition, which will take place in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 25 and 26.
Dean of the school of trades and technology, Chad Flinn, expresses his congratulations to the students and instructors for their accomplishments.
