MHC students promote allyship and belonging for Pride Week

In support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, students at Medicine Hat College (MHC) are promoting allyship and belonging on Sept. 18-22 with events and activities planned for Pride Week.

President of the Student’s Association (SAMHC), Lily Schaerer, says by taking part in the celebrations, students can show their support for their peers and promote an environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

“We hope these celebrations inspire empathy, compassion, and a commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space for all students regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” says Schaerer. “It's an opportunity to learn about the challenges faced by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and the strides made in creating a more inclusive society.”

SAMHC encourages students, staff, and faculty to show their support for pride by attending the annual flag raising on Sept. 18 at 12 p.m. at the campus’ main entrance, leaving messages of support and taking part in a photo booth throughout the day in Centennial Hall on Sept. 19, and creating a button to display their pronouns or messages of inclusivity between 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at The Den on Sept. 21.

There will also be a community information fair between 11 a.m.-1p.m. in the B-Wing, where students are invited to learn about resources on campus and in the community on Sept. 20, followed by a SafeLink workshop from 4:30 -5:30 p.m. in the Crowfoot Room on Sept. 21.

Decorating the campus in colour, staff and faculty will also display their support for pride with the annual office decorating contest, for which judging will take place on Sept. 22.
