University Studies: Medical Laboratory Science (Pre-Professional)


About this Program

You can complete the first year of your studies in Medical Lab Science (U of A) or Health Science (U of C) and then apply and transfer to the respective institution.

With a degree in Medical Lab Science or Health Science you can expect excellent job opportunities. Graduates have transferable skills that make them employable not only as medical technologists, but also as research, environmental, and food technologists, as well as biotechnologists. A degree in medical lab science can provide you with career opportunities in agricultural and industrial labs, hospital labs, pharmaceutical labs, public health, post secondary institutions, or veterinary research clinics.

Graduates can also proceed to post-graduate and other studies that require a four-year degree. You can begin your studies in Medical Lab Science (University of Alberta) or Health Science (University of Calgary) at Medicine Hat College and then apply to transfer to the respective university to complete your degree.

High School
(Alberta High School Courses or equivalents with a minimum 60% average in the required courses) 

  • ELA 30-1
  • Biology 30
  • Chemistry 30
  • Math 30-1
  • One Grade 12 5-credit subject (excluding Special Projects). Physics 30 recommended.

Mature Student (21 years of age)
