The Centre for Innovation (C4I) at Medicine Hat College is seeking a full-time, temporary Field Research Assistant – Precision Agriculture to support applied research activities related to sustainable agriculture, precision farming, and the use of emerging technologies in natural resource management. This role is ideal for students or graduates from STEM fields such Agronomy, Environmental Science, Plant Biology, et cetera, who are looking to gain hands-on experience. The intern will assist with field scouting, data collection and knowledge mobilization alongside producers, researchers and innovation partners throughout the growing season.
A little about the role:
- Conduct regular field scouting to monitor crop health, pest populations, and disease occurrence.
- Collect soil samples, plant growth data, and environmental measurements using both traditional and tech-based scouting methods.
- Accurately record and organize data in research management systems.
- Support setup and maintenance of research plots, including planting and treatment applications.
- Assist in data analysis and reporting in collaboration with research lead and faculty analyst.
- Contribute to literature reviews and help design future applied research projects.
- Maintain sampling equipment and follow safety protocols during fieldwork.
- Participate in knowledge sharing by:

o Supporting planning and delivery of field days, technology showcases, and community events.

o Preparing educational materials, training content, and event summaries or reports.

o Engaging with producers, external partners, and internal stakeholders to share findings and raise awareness of innovation impacts.
Details:
- Enrolled in or graduated from a post-secondary program in Agronomy, Environmental Science, Plant Biology, or a related STEM field.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in outdoor agricultural settings.
- Basic knowledge of crop scouting techniques and agronomic principles.
- Comfortable using digital tools and technology for data collection and analysis.
- Interest in agricultural innovation, sustainability, and the use of drones or sensor-based systems (training will be provided as needed).
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to research sites.
Funding and Eligibility
This internship is funded by an external program that supports youth employment. To be eligible for the position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be up to 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the internship.
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada.
- Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations.
Term of Appointment: 21-July-2025 to 28-Feb-2026
Hours: 35 hours per week
Wage Rate: $25.00 per hour
