Student Research Assistant - Ferruginous Hawk
Competition Number: 126015 | Type: Contract |
Closing Date: August 31, 2025 | Category: Part-Time, Temporary |
The Centre for Innovation (C4I) at Medicine Hat College (MHC) is excited to offer a Student Research Assistant position to study the Ferruginous hawk. We invite current Medicine Hat College students that are motivated and detail-oriented individuals with an interest in wildlife conservation to apply. As the Student Research Assistant, you will play a key role in analyzing field data to inform management strategies, contributing directly to a technical report and/or peer-reviewed publication, with direct implication for species management/recovery in Alberta.
A little about the role:
In this role, you will analyze remote camera images from artificial nest platforms to document key nesting events such as arrival, pair formation, egg laying, clutch size, hatching, and the number of chicks fledged. This data will support an understanding of Ferruginous hawk breeding success and help develop a photographic guide to age chicks, an important tool for guiding nest relocation decisions. You’ll also examine prey delivery patterns to better understand the hawk’s diet and its role in naturally controlling ground squirrel populations, a major concern for agricultural producers. Your work will demonstrate the value of supporting Ferruginous hawk conservation on working lands.
Details:
- A keen interest in research and innovation, with a willingness to learn.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to carefully observe and document visual patterns.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A background or strong interest in Environmental Biology, Sciences, or Sustainable Innovation.
