Medicine Hat College’s Yuill School of Health and Community Services invite applications for a part-time temporary Instructor in Addictions Counselling. This is a one-year, part-time temporary appointment commencing July 1, 2026, with a high likelihood of renewal.
The part-time temporary instructor for ADDC 180 is responsible for facilitating a 42-hour course that explores the history of addictions within Indigenous communities through the lens of colonialism, residential schools, and multigenerational trauma. This position requires a deep commitment to Indigenous pedagogy, emphasizing relationship-building, reflection, and reciprocity as core instructional methods.
A little about the role:
We are seeking an individual with a background in Indigenous studies, social work, or addictions counselling to teach the following course:
Fall 2026
One section of ADDC 180: Indigenous Ways of Healing
- Facilitate a 42-hour course examining Indigenous addiction history through the lenses of colonialism and residential schools.
- Guide students through traditional healing methods, including ceremony and land-based reconnection.
- Lead instructional activities grounded in relationship and reciprocity, such as talking circles and collaboration with Elders.
- Manage a flexible, classroom, community and land‑based learning environment.
- Evaluate diverse student learning artifacts, including reflection journals and community-based projects.
Relevant teaching and research experience in Indigenous pedagogy, trauma-informed care, and cultural safety will be considered an asset. This position requires a passion and commitment to learners, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work within a collaborative faculty team.

Details:
- Relevant graduate degree (e.g., MSW, MA in Indigenous Studies, or related field) required.
- Post-secondary teaching experience and/or a research background in Indigenous health or addictions will be considered an asset.
- Experience facilitating circles or working directly with Elders and Indigenous community organizations is highly valued.
- Equivalent combinations of work experience and post-secondary education may be considered.
- Willingness to be part of a dynamic and collaborative team that focuses on student success and has a positive, appreciative, and enthusiastic personality.
- Strong communication skills and computer literacy.
