BIOGRAPHY
Amy Duval is a visual artist and educator originally from North Vancouver, BC. She holds an MFA in Craft/Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, a BFA in Visual Art from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and a BA in History in Art from the University of Victoria.
Duval’s interdisciplinary practice explores ideas of transformation, place, memory, and the ways materials can hold personal histories and reflections on time, systems, and labour. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and in the United States, including at Harbourfront Centre, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, the Port Moody Arts Centre, and the Yuill Family Gallery. She has participated in artist residencies at Medalta International Artists in Residence and Harbourfront Centre.
Her work has been recognized with an Emerging Artist Research Grant from the BC Arts Council, the RISE Emerging Artist Award, the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics, and a Windgate Fellowship.
As an educator, Duval enjoys helping students become more curious in their creative work. She believes that learning to make art is about learning how to look closely, experiment, ask questions, and finding an authentic way of working. Her teaching encourages hands-on exploration, strong technical skill building, and an openness to trying new ideas and approaches. She sees the studio as a space of investigation, where collaboration, critical reflection, and experimentation are essential ingredients for deeper understanding.
