Ryan Oscar is the Program Coordinator and Instructor for the new Addictions Counselling Diploma at Medicine Hat College. With years of experience in the recovery field, including leadership with a local non-profit, Ryan is passionate about equipping future counsellors with the knowledge, skills, and compassion needed to support individuals and families impacted by addiction.
Ryan’s teaching is unique because he blends neuroscience, evidence-based practices, and real-world experience. He integrates frameworks such as the Brain Story, motivational interviewing, and recovery capital into highly interactive classes. Students can expect a dynamic learning environment filled with group discussions, role-plays, and mock client sessions that prepare them for the realities of front-line work.
His favorite topics to teach include resilience and the science of addiction, particularly exploring how trauma and brain development affect behavior and recovery. Ryan loves seeing students have “aha moments” when challenging concepts connect to practical counselling strategies.
He has been instrumental in aligning the program with Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF) standards and establishing practicum opportunities with local agencies, ensuring graduates are career-ready.
Outside the classroom, Ryan is deeply involved in his community, including co-organizing events like the Rise Up Hot Air Balloon Festival, which draws thousands annually. He also previously hosted a recovery-focused podcast with over 130,000 downloads, sharing stories of recovery, hope, and resilience. A fun fact: in 2015, Ryan cycled across Canada to raise awareness for addiction recovery, a journey that reflects his commitment to resilience and recovery advocacy.
Ryan strives to create a supportive, challenging classroom where students grow into ethical, skilled, and compassionate professionals.
