Dr. Sevgur's research interests are migration contemporary political economy, gender relations, and international development. She is also actively engaged with research projects studying migration and integration in Canada which evaluate settlement programs, and contributes to knowledge transfer and policy forums. Her more recent work focuses on historical representations of immigrants and refugees in mainstream Canadian media.
Dr. Sevgur tailors her teaching content according to all students' backgrounds and needs. Her classes are safe and open spaces where students are encouraged to reflect on the course content. Cognitively, classes are designed to familiarize students with various perspectives in the scholarly literature. Dr. Sevgur believes in discussions where students relate their personal experiences to the course content. Such discussions develop critical thinking skills and facilitate informed decisions in real life. Importantly, in reflecting on their positionality in society, students can solidify the connection between theory and practice. These examples then showcase the layered complexities of the human condition.
