Monica Braat has dedicated her career to supporting children and educators through inclusive practice. Her work spans early learning, K to 12 education, post secondary teaching, and inclusive education consulting, with a particular focus on developmental diversity and belonging.
In recent years, Monica’s work has brought her more fully into early childhood education. Through this work, she has become increasingly drawn to early learning approaches, which she understands not only as practices for young children, but as a broader articulation of inclusive, relational, and developmentally responsive practice. Teaching in the Early Childhood Education program at Medicine Hat College allows her to connect these approaches to wider understandings of inclusive education.
Her teaching is grounded in the belief that inclusive practice begins with thoughtful design, strong relationships, and careful attention to the everyday environments in which children learn and grow. In the classroom, Monica focuses on connecting theory to practice and supporting students to develop confidence, reflection, and professional judgment.
Alongside her teaching, Monica has been involved in board and advisory work with Inclusion Medicine Hat, Inclusion Alberta, and Inclusion Canada, and is a current associate with Inclusive Education Canada. This involvement situates her to engage in work related to inclusion that extends beyond education into broader community contexts. She values collaboration and considers it a privilege to learn with students, colleagues, and others in the larger community.
