Desa-Rae Laurent is an instructor in the Service Dog and Canine Management Studies program, where she brings a strong applied focus to canine training, handling, and professional practice. She is dedicated to preparing students for the realities of working in service dog training and canine care through practical, ethical, and evidence-informed instruction.
With over a decade of experience in both dog training and grooming, Desa-Rae integrates real-world industry knowledge into the classroom. Her teaching emphasizes humane training methods, clear communication, and thoughtful decision-making to support both canine welfare and handler success.
Desa-Rae is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology through Athabasca University, strengthening her instructional approach with a foundation in learning theory, behavior, and human–animal interaction. This academic background supports her focus on critical thinking and reflective practice within service dog education.
In addition to her instructional role, Desa-Rae owns and operates a professional grooming salon and continues to work directly with dogs and clients. Maintaining active involvement in the industry allows her to deliver instruction that reflects current professional standards and expectations.
Outside of her professional work, Desa-Rae has been actively involved in dog agility since 2013, teaching, training, and competing in the sport. At home, she works and trains alongside her two dogs, an eight-year-old Whippet and a four-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback.
