Career Expo offers students and job seekers a direct ‘in’ with industry
Medicine Hat College (MHC) will host its annual Career Expo on October 8, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with nearly 60 employers and service providers from across Western Canada eager to connect with students and job seekers.According to Shelly Drefs, student career services assistant, the event gives attendees insight into the ever-changing labour market, networking and employment opportunities, and the advantage of human connection.
“In a world filled with communication through technology and gatekeepers, this is an opportunity to physically meet someone, ask questions, and create an ‘in’ for future postings,” said Drefs.
Having organized the Expo for 19 years, Drefs has seen it grow from fewer than 20 employers to nearly 60, a testament to the event’s value and to MHC’s expanding programs, pathways, and partnerships.
“Employers that participate tell us it’s through this event that they secure many of their future hires and volunteers, and they are always impressed with the quality of conversations throughout the day.”
Beyond the energy and overall tone of the Expo, Drefs says one of the most exciting parts is hearing about interviews being scheduled or positions being filled.
For first-time attendees, she emphasizes the importance of professionalism and respect: “Some exhibitors in attendance may be part of the hiring decision. Ask questions about the company, job pathways, and application process. The more you learn about a company, the more likely you are to find a great fit.”
The MHC Career Expo is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.mhc.ab.ca.
