Ag-focused case competition develops accounting skills in MHC and high school students
Local high school students are getting ready to team up with Medicine Hat College (MHC) Business Administration students for an exciting case competition, taking place on Nov. 4.Cows, Crops, & Calculators, is an accounting and agriculture-focused competition in which MHC students mentor high school students from Prairie Rose School Division as they work together to solve a business scenario.
“Students will build confidence, teamwork, professionalism and critical thinking in a safe environment that mirrors real-world scenarios, where decisions must be made quickly. The decisions are backed by evidence and communicated to the client. It's a great way to connect theory with practice,” says Heather Stahl, academic chair for MHC’s School of Business & Continuing Studies.
The collaborative learning opportunity is made possible by the CPA Education Foundation and will expose each student to accounting-specific skills such as compiling financial information and evaluating decisions with financial and non-financial information.
The experiential practice will also strengthen essential business and interpersonal skills including strategic thinking, presentation design, communication, teamwork, leadership and time management.
“Watching students engage with real world problems reminds us why experiential learning is so powerful. It brings theory to life, by showing students how their learning translates into real-world impact and inspires them to become the business leaders of tomorrow,” says Stahl.
Teams will be given limited time to create a case and present to judges, competing for $6,000 worth of cash prizes.
