MHC Addictions Counselling approved by CACCF

The Addictions Counselling program at Medicine Hat College (MHC) is proud to share its recognition as an approved program by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF).

The two-year program, launched in Fall 2025, prepares learners for a career in the addiction field by developing skills in assessment, treatment, prevention, and relapse. The program was made possible by the Government of Alberta’s $10 million targeted enrolment expansion initiative to support mental health initiatives across the provincial post-secondary system.

Jason Openo, dean of the Yuill School of Health & Community Services at MHC, says the approval from CACCF is a significant milestone for the long-term sustainability of the program.

“This approval demonstrates that our Addictions Counselling program has a strong foundation to build upon, and the recognition allows us to focus on evolution through deeper engagement with partners and communities,” says Openo. “Now that we have CACCF approval, we are also in a better position to develop university partnerships, which we are actively pursuing.”

CACCF aims to ensure quality standards in addiction counselling are upheld, providing resources for credible programs, certification opportunities, and training for those who aspire or work in the field. The organization’s approval of MHC’s program is effective for five years.

“An addictions counselling diploma is essential to Southeast Alberta to address the region’s growing mental health and substance use challenges, especially in underserved rural and Indigenous communities,” adds Openo. “This year, our second year Addictions Counselling students will be completing their practicums in community organizations, healthcare settings, schools, and residential programs, and we will be getting feedback from our partners and students on the community impact of the program.”

This is the second industry approval received by a program in the Yuill School of Health & Community Services this year. This spring, MHC was recognized for its Practical Nurse diploma by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, effective until May 2030.

“Industry recognition signals that our programs are high-quality, and the approval validates their impact. Students and community partners can have confidence in our programs and their students, who will in turn improve the quality of care in our region.”
