Extracurricular creative practice on display at MHC

Displaying the creative pursuits of those who may not define themselves as artists, the Art & Design program at Medicine Hat College (MHC) is excited to launch their next exhibition, Extracurricular: MHC Creates.
The show, which runs from Dec. 1 until Jan. 22, recognizes the talents behind the staff and faculty across campus at MHC.
Jessica Plattner, Art & Design program coordinator and instructor, says she was inspired by a local art show that took place last fall, hosted by the Hat Art Club and Medicine Hat Potters Association at the Esplanade Art Gallery. While viewing the exhibition, Life Cycles: New Works, she recognized one of the artists’ names as a staff member at MHC.
While creating the exhibition, she discovered interest from individuals in a variety of different roles at the college to highlight their work.
“I was reminded of why creative practice matters so deeply to so many of us. Making something with your hands is one of the best ways to shift your perspective and tune out the stresses of the world,” says Plattner.
She adds that creation can help individuals feel connected to themselves, their materials, and to their community.
All are invited to view the exhibition at the Cultural Centre’s One on One Gallery from Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is also a free, public reception being held on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
