Medicine Hat College receives $2 million in planning funds for Centre for Community Wellness
Medicine Hat College (MHC) is moving one step closer to transforming campus wellness and workforce training, thanks to a $2 million investment from the Government of Alberta.Aligned to the college’s top capital priority, the funding will allow MHC to plan and design the proposed Centre for Community Wellness (CCW), bringing the project to a point where it would be ready for construction.
The goal of the CCW is to enable the college to expand capacity and training in high-demand health and community service programs, including Social Work, Practical Nursing, Health Care Aide, and Addictions Counselling. Campus wellness supports, such as counselling, medical services, Indigenous student supports, and childcare, will also be included in this space, making them more readily accessible to students and community members.
“The Centre for Community Wellness represents a transformational opportunity for our region,” says Kevin Shufflebotham, MHC president & CEO. “We are grateful for this planning investment, which allows us to take the next steps toward building a facility that meets the wellness needs of our students and community while preparing the next generation of health and social service professionals.”
Many wellness services on campus are currently delivered from trailers, isolated rooms, or off-site locations. The CCW will create a seamless, student-centered wellness hub and expand experiential learning and simulation spaces aligned with Alberta’s workforce priorities.
MHC will continue to work with government, community partners, and donors to secure the remaining capital funding required to construct the facility.
“This project aligns strongly with provincial priorities for mental health, rural development, and workforce training,” added Shufflebotham. “We look forward to continuing discussions with the Government of Alberta and our community as we advance this important investment.”
