Community invited to gather for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Medicine Hat College (MHC), in partnership with the Miywasin Friendship Centre and the Firekeepers Women’s Society, welcomes the community to campus on Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Indigenous drummers lead a walk for reconciliation where several community members are following and wearing orange shirts.

The annual gathering provides an opportunity to come together in a spirit of learning, reflection and reconciliation while honouring Survivors, families and communities impacted by residential schools.

“On Sept. 30, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, those who carry profound grief, strength and resilience,” said Janice Randhile, Manager of Indigenous Engagement & Student Supports at MHC, also known by her Blackfoot name, Naa'toih'kiayo'aakii. “We remember the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who have lived with that loss for generations.

Reconciliation is not the work of a single day. It is a long-term commitment, a daily practice and a shared responsibility. It asks us to listen deeply, build relationships grounded in trust and respect, and take meaningful action within our communities. Gatherings like this create space for honest conversation, healing and walking together toward a future rooted in justice and dignity.”

The evening will feature a one-kilometre walk for reconciliation, story sharing led by Indigenous Elders, a smudge, blanket ceremony, honour song and round dance. Together, these activities will provide opportunities for reflection, learning and community connection.

Free parking is available, and attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair if they plan to stay for the duration of the evening. Additional event details are available in the poster below.
