Career Expo opens doors to opportunities across Alberta’s workforce

Hundreds of career opportunities will be within reach for job seekers, students, alumni and community members when Medicine Hat College’s (MHC) annual Career Expo returns on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

More than 60 ready-to-hire employers will fill Centennial Hall and the B-wing, giving attendees the chance to connect directly with recruiters and explore available positions.

The event brings together employers, students, alumni and community members for a day of networking, recruitment and career discovery.

Career Expo has grown significantly over the past two decades. What began as an event with 15 to 25 exhibitors now welcomes more than 60 organizations representing sectors such as healthcare, education, trades, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, policing, government and community services.

Attendees will be able to learn about organizations, current openings and career pathways directly from employers, while some organizations may conduct on-the-spot interviews with candidates who come prepared.

Attendees meet employers face-to-face, ask questions and learn more about career pathways across a variety of industries.

According to Shelly Drefs, expo organizer and student career services assistant at MHC, face-to-face interaction remains one of the event’s most valuable features.

“Many people spend hours applying online and hoping for a response,” said Drefs. “Career Expo allows attendees to have conversations with employers, ask questions and make connections that can open doors.”

Employers from healthcare, education, trades, technology, government and community organizations attend Career Expo each year to connect with prospective employees.

Over the years, Career Expo has helped attendees secure employment, practicum placements, internships and volunteer opportunities. For Drefs, one of the most rewarding moments is seeing former students return as employers, helping others begin their own career journeys.

“It comes full circle,” said Drefs. “We've had alumni return to campus to represent their organizations and recruit future talent. It's always rewarding to see those connections continue long after graduation.”
