About the Event

Discover emerging learning technologies and transformative teaching strategies being used at Medicine Hat College.

The goal for Geekapalooza is to inform, inspire, and engage participants in the use of educational technology by sharing tools or techniques that are being used effectively by faculty and staff at Medicine Hat College. Geekapalooza takes place each year on the day after College Day.

This year’s event will be held on AUGUST 21.

 
Registration

Participants can join in-person or live online. Registration is NOT required and is open to all MHC faculty and staff. There will be a social following the event to keep the conversations going, as well as prizes and lunch provided for participants.

Geekapalooza Schedule

10:15 AM - Dr. Colleen Whidden
To kick off this year’s event, Colleen Whidden (Director, Teaching &
Learning) will provide an introduction and brief overview of the exciting
things happening in Teaching & Learning this upcoming academic year

10:30 AM - Carly Ridgewell
The time we have all been anticipating has finally arrived - the inception
of a new Blackboard system. Blackboard Ultra is a modern,
user-friendly version of our current Blackboard Learning Managment
System, designed with a clean, responsive interface and improved
communication tools. In this session, participants will be introduced to
the new look, features and upcoming training sessions to learn more.

11:10 AM - Rene Hemenway
In this session we will discuss how to use AI to create materials for
your course including course outcomes, presentations, learning
activities, and assessments.

1:00 PM - Kayley Sheibner and Andrea Woods
In this session, participants will get a virtual tour of the high-fidelity
Nursing Simulation Lab at Brooks Campus. This interactive tour,
created using Genially, provides students with an asynchronous
orientation of the lab and equipment. Learn how this simple innovation
supports our learners and how you can create engaging digital material
using Genially, a free web-based tool.

1:40 PM - Carly Ridgewell and Andrea Woods
There has been increasing demand for faculty to become experts in
content creation, developing just-in-time digital learning material. The
new Media Lab located in T207 is equipped with the necessary tools
to make creating professional podcasts, lecture capture and other
digital media a breeze!

2:20 PM - Geoff Hamilton
In his role as Gen AI Research and Support, Dr. Geoff Hamilton will
offer a brief summary of responses to Gen AI at MHC before opening
the floor to questions. Faculty and staff are invited to share their
experiences about Gen AI, raise concerns about our institutional
responses, or offer suggestions for future responses.
