Began teaching at MHC: 2023
Troy started teaching at Medicine Hat College for the Winter 2023 semester. He has a PHD in Education from the University of North Dakota, his Masters in Education from the University of Victoria, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Lethbridge, as well as additional studies from the University of South Alabama and Medicine Hat College.
Being in classrooms for the last 30 years has provided Troy with more questions than answers. Wondering about what might be the best way to introduce a new idea, how to build out thinking so people feel a deep ownership of their learning, or what are the best ways to help people make things stick so they fully understand.
Most recently, Troy has been focused on gaining his own understanding of the learners in Generation Z and how they differ from those from other generations. What does quality learning look like for a twenty-year-old versus someone in their fifties?
Being able to weave in the theories surrounding how adults learn with what we are coming to understand of young adults, makes teaching post-secondary the best challenge. Working in the MHC Faculty of Education is an opportunity for real time case studies, where being an instructor gets you a front row seat to in-the-moment research.
Having two children who are currently university students and a wife for a teacher, most of Troy’s dinners are spent lamenting education in all forms. Conversations in his home have him wrestling between low- and high-quality teaching, assessment practices that truly reflect growth, or what teachers do or don't do in classrooms that make us want to be better. Some meaningful conversations with family and friends over a well-balanced pollo-vegetarian meal, coupled with multiple active pursuits is the ultimate recipe for a perfect day.
