Homecoming 2011 headliner announced
June 16, 2011
Juno-award winning Bedouin Soundclash will headline Medicine Hat College’s Homecoming 2011 celebration, slated for September 16-17.
The free all-ages concert will cap off a weekend of homecoming activities at the college, dubbed “Shake, Rattler n’ Roll.” Festivities begin on Friday, September 16 with an Alumni Cabaret featuring local recording artist and MHC alumni Mahoney.
Saturday begins with the Rattlers Hall of Fame breakfast, where new members will be inducted and alumni will be reunited. Rattlers soccer kicks off at noon, with home opener games for both the men’s and women’s teams vs. Lethbridge.
For the second straight year, MHC is proud to offer the ATB Family Fun Zone. Families are invited to join in the fun with a variety of activities for kids of all ages on Saturday afternoon. Bouncy houses, slides, face painters and the like will keep the whole community having fun.
MHC is expanding the homecoming event this year by starting the live music earlier than in previous years. At 4 p.m. both the live music and ATB Family Fun Zone will begin. Further acts will join the musical slate prior to Bedouin Soundclash, with a full line-up being confirmed later this summer.
“We want to create a festival feel for homecoming,” said Jennifer Thompson, media officer. “With a Saturday afternoon and evening of live music, family entertainment, great food and Kinsmen beer garden, it promises to be an entertaining time.”
Thompson said that Bedouin Soundclash was a natural fit for the event and an outdoor venue.
“They have an island beat sound; one that makes the crowd want to sway and sing along,” she said. “They are fun, upbeat, and a group you can move to. It will be a great performance outside on the beautiful grounds of the college.”
The evening will once again end with a spectacular display of fireworks set to music.
“It will be an impressive end to a weekend of fun events,” said Thompson. “We hope that everyone in the community comes out to enjoy some or all of the activities. It is not just about MHC students, alumni and staff. This is an event that is meant to bring all of Medicine Hat together; not only to show our appreciation for the community’s support, but to bring summer to a close with a bang.”
This will be the fourth consecutive year MHC has hosted a homecoming weekend with a headliner band. Previous acts included Default, The Trews, and 54•40.
The Alumni Cabaret is a free event, but attendees must preregister by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The Rattlers Hall of Fame breakfast is the only ticketed portion of the weekend; tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 403.529.3834. The weekend event is sponsored by Earls and Local Public Eatery, ATB Financial and TD Meloche Monnex.
